We are dedicated to minimising the risk of allergies by supplying only cosmetic grade products. These high-quality materials are specifically chosen to be safer for your skin and overall health.

However, it’s important to note that we may not be aware of what other products your clients have used in the past. Some clients might have been exposed to lower-grade cyanoacrylate in lash glues or nail products, which can sometimes lead to allergic reactions.

Understanding Lash Glue Allergies

When it comes to lash glue, allergies can be tricky. The main culprits behind these reactions are often either the cyanacrylate itself or the stabilisers included in the glue.

Here's a simple breakdown:

1. Cyanacrylate.
Even "Cyanacrylate-free" glues still contain other forms of acrylates, which means that if someone is allergic to Cyanacrylate, they could experience allergic reactions to these other types, too. Ask the client if they have ever experienced a nail allergy. This can indicate if its an acrylate allergy. You will also find these glues may still contain the stabilisers listed below which the client could be reacting to.

2. Carbon black is an ingredient in black adhesives. If you're concerned about possible allergic reactions, it’s helpful to ask your client a couple of questions.

First, do they  usually have any reactions to mascara or eyeliner? If they do, it’s likely that carbon black could be the cause of their sensitivity. However, if they don’t have any issues with these products, then it’s probably not the problem.

3. Stabilisers. Many glues include stabilisers that may not be skin-friendly. We are seeing a rising number of allergic reactions associated with these stabilisers, so it’s crucial to choose your products wisely.

Check Ingredients: Look for glues that use cosmetic-grade stabilisers and avoid those containing ingredients such as:

- Hydroquinone (a highly allergenic ingredient - see blog on this)
- Poly isocyanate

Polyisocyanate is a chemical compound that plays a significant role in various industrial applications, including coatings, adhesives, and sealants. However, it’s important to note that this compound is not safe for use in eyelash extension adhesives due to its hazardous properties and potential health risks.

Health Risks of Polyisocyanate

Polyisocyanates can pose serious health threats, particularly when inhaled or when they come into contact with the skin and mucous membranes. Here are some key points to consider:

- Respiratory Issues: Inhaling vapours or aerosols from polyisocyanates can irritate the respiratory system. This may lead to symptoms such as:
  - Coughing
  - Wheezing
  - Shortness of breath
  - Chest tightness
  - Throat irritation

- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, which can exacerbate respiratory problems.

- Long-term Effects: Prolonged or repeated exposure to polyisocyanates can lead to more severe respiratory conditions, including:
  - Asthma
  - Bronchitis
  - Chemical pneumonitis

Given these risks, it is crucial to avoid using polyisocyanate in products that come into close contact with sensitive areas, such as the eyes and skin. Always prioritise safety and choose alternatives that are specifically designed for cosmetic use.

- N-methylpyrrolidone

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a chemical commonly used as a solvent and stabilizer in various industrial applications. Recently, it has made its way into lash adhesives due to its low production cost and effective adhesive properties. However, the use of NMP in lash products raises serious health concerns, especially for lash artists and their clients, including pregnant women.

Health Risks Associated with NMP

Research has shown that exposure to NMP can negatively impact fertility. Studies indicate that both men and women may experience reduced fertility rates and reproductive complications as a result of NMP exposure.

Animal studies, particularly those involving rats, have revealed troubling findings, such as developmental abnormalities in foetuses and harmful effects on reproductive organs. These results highlight the potential dangers of NMP, especially for vulnerable populations.

Ethical Concerns and Human Health

One of the main reasons NMP cannot be ethically tested on humans is due to its potential to cause irreversible harm. This makes human trials not only unethical but also impractical. As a result, the full extent of NMP's impact on human health remains largely unknown, leaving lash artists and their clients at risk.

Special Considerations for Pregnant Women

Of particular concern is the practice of providing lash extensions to pregnant women. These clients may unknowingly be exposed to NMP and its associated risks. Given the sensitive nature of pregnancy

- Phthalic Anhydride

Phthalic Anhydride is a chemical compound often used as a plasticiser and solvent in various products. Recently, it has been included in lash adhesives due to its adhesive properties and low production cost. However, its presence in these products raises significant health and safety concerns.

Health Risks of Phthalic Anhydride

One of the main issues with Phthalic Anhydride is its potential to cause harmful health effects upon exposure. Research has linked this compound to several health problems, including:

- Respiratory Issues: Inhalation of Phthalic Anhydride can lead to respiratory problems, making it a concern for lash artists who frequently work with these adhesives.
- Skin Irritation: Direct contact with the skin can cause irritation, leading to discomfort and potential allergic reactions.
- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop allergies to Phthalic Anhydride, which can result in further health complications.

Prolonged exposure to this chemical can worsen these issues, potentially leading to chronic respiratory conditions and skin problems.

Reproductive Health Concerns

Phthalic Anhydride is also classified as a reproductive toxicant. Studies have shown that exposure to this compound can negatively affect fertility and reproductive organs. Animal research has indicated a link between Phthalic Anhydride and reproductive disorders, as well as developmental abnormalities in offspring. These findings raise serious concerns about the potential impact on human reproductive health.

Conclusion

Given the significant health risks associated with Phthalic Anhydride, it is crucial for lash artists and clients to be aware of the dangers posed by this chemical in lash adhesives. Prioritising safety by choosing products that are free from harmful ingredients can help protect the health of both professionals and their clients. Awareness and caution are key to ensuring a safe and healthy lash extension experience.

The last three ingredients are particularly concerning as they can lead to serious reactions. Hydroquinone is controversial; although it's banned in some cosmetics, it might still show up in lash glues because they aren't categorised strictly as cosmetics. And the problem is, many suppliers do not list their stabilisers so you never really know what is in it!

The Importance of Testing

Another thing to keep in mind: when it comes to imported glues, manufacturers may not independently test every batch.

This lack of testing means we can’t always be sure about the ingredients and their safety.

Tips for Choosing Safe Lash Glue

- Cosmetic Grade: Always opt for glue that is labelled as cosmetic grade. This indicates that it meets higher safety standards suitable for lash extensions.

After two years of research and the development of safer formulations, we use BHA as a stabiliser. BHA is approved in cosmetics across multiple global regulatory bodies. It effectively stabilises lash glue while being gentler on skin and eyes, significantly reducing the possibility of irritation or allergic reactions.

Going Above and Beyond in Safety.

While lash glues don’t need to meet full cosmetic standards, we ensure ours do.
This includes intensive dermatological and ophthalmological testing for safety, alongside transparent ingredient listings. Our compliance with global regulations means our products maintain the highest industry standards.

Aiming for Global Compliance and Quality

Trusted by lash professionals worldwide, our lash glues set new benchmarks in safety and quality.
Make the Safe Switch
At Ladybug Lashes, we are proud to lead the industry with our BHA-stabilised lash glues, focusing on safety, client satisfaction, and overall effectiveness.
